You'll know about the deeds and heroics of many great and notorious men throughout history, but the stories featured here are all about the women that the history books often leave out.

Many of these women did great things, others were thought of as totally scandalous. Some went against the social rules of their day, and great many carved out careers for themselves, often in a male dominated environment, at a time when women were meant to stay at home and be odedient wives, mothers. and daughters.

I have included a wide range of women from a variety of different social backgrounds, countries and historical periods. They all led lives that are very different to our own. Many wrote about their own experiences, and some were silenced. Others have been imortalized in books, film, poetry or art. Many of them either challenged female steroptypes or helped to change them. Others were constrained by them or became victims of them.

My hope is that you will want to explore these women's lives further, and you'll go on to buy and read some of the other highly recommended books mentioned on here.
